The Origin of "Dewclaw"

There is no definitive reason why the dewclaw is so named. Some say it's because the claw only touches the dewy surface of the grass and not the ground itself.

The term appears as early as 1576 in The Booke of Hunting by the English poet, George Turberville..."those whiche are well ioynted and dewclawed are beil to make bloudhoundes" (those which are well jointed and dewclawed are best to make bloodhounds).

Turberville was the second son of Henry Turberville of Dorset and nephew of James Turberville, Bishop of Exeter. The Turbervilles were an old Dorsetshire family, the inspiration for the d'Urbervilles of Thomas Hardy's novel, Tess of the d'Urbervilles.

'Well, Hi Morgan, what do you have there?" I asked. "Look what I found, it's an injured pigeon", came the response. Little did Mike and I know that, with those words uttered about six years ago, the beginning of an unusual, mostly happy, often stressful and sometimes very sad relationship with a beautiful, white pigeon was about to commence.
A pigeon who became known as Miss Pidge.
