Sweet Dreams Heritage Inn
The small town of Rossland, B.C. was transformed into a prosperous mining community when Joe Morris staked the first major claim on Red Mountain in the spring of 1890. This was the start of the gold rush. By 1897 Rossland had a population of 7,000 and was incorporated as a city. This booming city now boasted 5 major banks, 17 law firms and 42 saloons. Rossland had become one of the largest cities in Western Canada and a major business centre in North America.
2520 Kootenay Ave, commonly known as the "bank house", was built in 1896 by the Bank of Montreal for its managers. J.S.C. Fraser was the first manager to live here. James Fraser, relative of Simon Fraser who discovered the Fraser River, was a very colourful figure and played a prominent roll in Rossland's history. Mr. Fraser weathered a number of peculiar events which occured while he was manager of the bank in Rossland, including writing up the one million dollar cheque for the transfer of the Leroi Mine.
